1. Scanning The Intersection
The first step in generating an accurate digital environment is to collect the physical data. A digital environment can be produced using available information from sources such as scene photographs, survey data, and police reports, however the spatial data collected by 3D laser scanning provides a rich and accurate foundation for digital reconstruction, and is preferable whenever possible.

In this example, a 3D scan was conducted of the intersection at King Edward Avenue and Cartier Street in Vancouver BC. Because the scene was scanned at a different time that when the photographs were taken, several relevant key features that were present at the time of the accident were unavailable at the time of the scan, for example, the traffic control sign and hazard signs.
